UPDATE 7:21 p.m.: Finley entered the game and hit Terrace Marshall for a first down. On the next play, Finley threw to Boutte for a touchdown at the corner of the front pylon, but after further review, it was ruled incomplete. To make matters worse, Finley was intercepted on the next play after that. It gave Texas A&M the ball on its own 21.
LSU opted to insert true freshman quarterback Max Johnson towards the end of the 1st quarter against Texas A&M. TJ Finley, LSU's starting quarterback with Myles Brennan injured, couldn't get much going offensively against the Aggies. LSU has wanted to get both players action down the stretch of the season.
Going into the matchup with Texas A&M, LSU had to prepare for a tough crowd at Kyle Field. With two true freshmen at quarterback, head coach Ed Orgeron said the team was preparing for crowd noise like normal.
"As far as snap count for number one, how we're going to handle the snap count. That's huge on the road," Orgeron said on Monday. "We know we play music, Doug has a John Deere with a big speaker right behind it. And we play some music as loud as we possibly can. We get tired of hearing it on Tuesday and Wednesday. And then just give him the situation to where he's going to be calm and he can make the right calls."
Just a week ago, Finley led the game-winning score for the Tigers against Arkansas in a 27-24 win on the road. Orgeron praised his big-armed, Ponchatoula native for his poise. The game plan set LSU up for success, but it's been tougher sledding against the Top 10 ranked Aggies Saturday night in College Station.
"Controlled the time of possession. We had the ball for almost 42 minutes," Orgeron told reporters ahead of the Texas A&M game. "Outstanding job by Coach Ensminger of calling plays and managing the game. We were 12-of-23 on third down; they were 0 of 10. That was a big part of the football game. TJ, I thought, played a good game. He had no turnovers. Had that game-winning throw at the end. Nobody was open. He executed the scramble rules. Jaray Jenkins got open, what a great play by him."
Brennan remains out with an abdominal tear suffered against Missouri. LSU's missed the redshirt junior who was near the top of the Southeastern Conference in passing when he went down with the injury.
"We still haven't made a decision. It doesn't look like he's going to play," Orgeron said. "We still haven't made a decision on the operation if it's best to do it now. Jack is handling that with his parents and the doctors, and it's just not clearcut right now. So it's still probably status quo, but he's definitely not playing this week."
LSU and Texas A&M are battling on ESPN with the Aggies holding a 10-0 lead over the Tigers and in the redzone, at the time of publishing.
