“Nothing Against Lewis, but…”: Max Verstappen’s (Un)popular Opinion - Essentially Sports

It has been an unusual season for Max Verstappen. Although he has never directly fought Lewis Hamilton in the title race, it has not stopped him from continuing to push and challenge Mercedes.

But, it is not a source of frustration for Max as he gives due credit to both driver and car. So much so, that he believes nearly every driver on the grid would win races. If they had a Mercedes in their hands.

The Red Bull Racing driver is quoted as saying, “No, I’m not frustrated about that. I have a lot of respect for what they’ve achieved. I’m not frustrated about Lewis in a Mercedes car.”

Max Verstappen feels the Mercedes car is ‘so dominant’

There has been a general feeling of awe mixed with despair from the F1 community towards the Mercedes car. While it is stunning and powerful enough, its dominance means that the rest of the field is left playing catch-up with them–leading to one-sided races at times.

“To be honest, 90 percent of the field could win in that car. Nothing against Lewis, he’s a great driver, but the car is so dominant.” concluded Verstappen in his remarks.

Verstappen has actually had a very good 2020 season, when you take the Mercedes drivers out of the equation. 1 race win and 8 podiums are representation of a 23-year-old star, who still has his best years ahead of him.

Verstappen deserves a much better car in the 2021 season

The amusing part is among all the races that have taken been place this season. It has been either podium appearances, or retirements for Verstappen.

Honda has already stated that they are building a better power unit for 2021. But the overall integration leading to a faster car from Red Bull, is what Verstappen needs and fully deserves.

There is also then, the second driver conundrum. Funnily enough, a second driver heaping pressure on the Mercedes drivers upfront, could lead to better results from Max.

All in all, Verstappen just has to keep patience for the time being. For his time is already approaching bit by bit, and sooner rather than later, he would have a championship win to his name.
