Rutgers suspended starting cornerback Malachi "Max" Melton and reserve Chris Long after they were taken into police custody Tuesday morning for what coach Greg Schiano said was an “incident involving a paintball gun.” The Scarlet Knights will play at No. 19 Michigan on Saturday.
“I was informed that Chris Long and Malachi Melton were taken into police custody early this morning as a result of an incident involving a paintball gun,” Schiano said in a statement. “Both players have been suspended immediately.”
In his second season, Melton has two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, plus a blocked punt and four pass breakups amid Rutgers’ 3-0 start, which includes wins against Temple, Syracuse and Delaware. Long has yet to record a tackle in 2021.
The Scarlet Knights have allowed a total of 34 points in three games but face their stiffest test yet in the Wolverines, who have outscored their opponents by an average of 35.7 points per game.
