In the wake of protests across the nation over the death of George Floyd, many entertainment companies are facing decisions over pulling content and renaming or retheming rides.
“Gone with the Wind” is returning to HBO Max after its removal from the streaming platform on June 9.
The once critically acclaimed movie premiered in 1939, detailing a love story set during the American Civil War.
When the movie returns, an introduction by Jacqueline Stewart, University of Chicago cinema and media studies professor and Turner Classic Movies’ “Silent Sunday Nights” host, will accompany the film.
The introduction will offer historical context for the film.
NBC News reported that an HBO Max spokesperson said, “Gone with the Wind’ is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society.”
"These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible," the HBO Max statement said.
Will Disney change the themes of some of its attractions?
Disney’s “Splash Mountain” is also under public scrutiny. The attraction is based on the 1946 movie, “Song of the South,” which controversially depicts life on a plantation in Georgia following the Civil War according to IMDb.
Disney describes the log-flume attraction as a “whimsical world filled with classic characters and songs" but there are multiple petitions to retheme the attraction.
“While the ride is considered a beloved classic it’s history and storyline are steeped in extremely problematic and stereotypical racist tropes,” one Change.org user said.
The petition suggests replacing Splash Mountain with a “Princess and the Frog” themed attraction to further diversity in the park.
Another user raised the point that Disney refuses to put the movie into its streaming catalog because “it glories slave culture and racist tropes used to portray black people during the minstrel period of our performance history.”
In March, prior to the death of George Floyd, Disney executive chairman Bob Iger announced “Song of the South” would not be available for streaming on Disney+.
Iger said the movie is “not appropriate in today’s world,” Deadline reported.
Multiple films on the streaming platform are preceded by content warnings ranging from the depiction of the use of tobacco to “outdated cultural depictions.”
This would not be the first time a Disney ride would be updated to modern standards.
In 2018, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” rides were updated to better represent women.
