Massachusetts teen Skyla Sousa recently lived out a lifelong dream of being on a television show as she was one of 18 contestants on HBO Max’s new reality TV series “Karma,” which debuted Thursday.

The show, whose mantra is “What you give out, you get back,” is set in the Sierra National Forest and features 18 contestants paired offed in teams of two competing against one another in various puzzles and physical challenges to be crowned “Karma Champion.” Contestants live together in a camp without cell phones or access to the internet.

Sousa, who is now 15 years-old and lives in Lowell, got into acting at a young age and says it was her dad who suggested she audition for the show.

“My dad got this email from an old model/acting class I used to take when I was like, 10 or so,” Sousa said. “And he was like, ‘You know, let’s just let’s just try it out, right?' And so we, sent a picture and whatever, we didn’t really think anything of it.”

A few days later Sousa received a call requesting an audition. That is where she let her competitive spirit shine through, she said.

After a successful audition, Sousa landed a spot on the show beating out 14,000 other contestants.

“It’s just such an accomplishment to me, she said. “In the industry, you have to be the right person at the right time. And, so, I feel excited. Extremely lucky that I was able to do this.”

Sousa grew up playing sports including soccer, basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, track and more — all of which played a role in molding her competitive spirit, which helped her succeed in many of the challenges she endured filming the show, she said.

“I’m such, like, a competitive, physical person,” Sousa said. “I love to compete... I knew I would be a good contestant because I wouldn’t give up.”

Sousa endured various intense physical and mental challenges over the course of shooting “Karma” — the hardest, however, she says was one involving contestants on floating platforms in water throwing balance beams on to another platform to walk across without falling.

The key to succeeding in these challenges was communication and bonds with other contestants.

“People immediately started forming alliances and everything, like, the first day we were there,” said Sousa. “Alliances were formed and everything and that kinda, like, paves the way for how the game turns out.”

A major part of those alliances forming, she said, was not having access to cell phones, which forced the contestants to form strong, authentic relationships with one another.

“You couldn’t just, like, awkwardly sit on your phone, you had to talk to people,' she said. “So definitely, that played a big role in everyone getting along. And as for forming alliances so quickly, I would say, everyone wants to win. You know what I mean? So, they’re gonna do what they can to win.”

Overall, Sousa says, the experience was amazing.

“I can’t stress it enough that that was one of the best times I’ve ever had in my life because of the people I’ve met like, not even just the cast, like, the production, just such amazing people,” she said.

Now that the show is available to watch on HBO Max, Sousa says she’s going to binge-watch it herself and then have a viewing party with friends and family.

As for what’s next, Sousa, who is a student at Lowell High School, still has some schooling to finish. She expects there will be some reactions from fellow students if schools reopen next fall.

“Might be a little weird going back to school, but I’m gonna keep my head high because this is an amazing, amazing experience, and I deserve it. So keeping my head high when I walk in,” she said.

Her eyes are set on more opportunities like “Karma” as well, she said.
