Encinitas’s Max Root and El Cajon’s Jimmie Johnson will race in the Rolex 24 at Daytona Jan. 30-31.
Root, 21, coming off a 6th place finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will be racing an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 car and will be teamed up with Richard Westbrook (Rolex 24 winner), Charlie Eastwood (defending 24 Hour of SPA and 24 Hours of Le Mans winner), and Ben Keating (Rolex 24 winner). The UK-based Aston Martin team will be making its IMSA debut at the Rolex 24.
In an all-star melding of championship pedigrees, Johnson will be teamed in a Cadillac DPi (Daytona Prototype International) with Simon Pagenaud (2016 IndyCar champion, 2018 Indianapolis 500 winner), Mike Rockenfeller (DTM touring car champion and 24 Hours of Le Mans GT winner) and Kamui Kobayashi (a Formula One veteran who won the past two overall Rolex 24s at Wayne Taylor Racing).
Formula One driver Kevin Magnussen will be joining Chip Ganassi’s team in a DPi Cadillac alongside two-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner Renger van dear Zande.
The Rolex 24 (formerly known as the 24 Hours of Daytona) is a 24-hour race that has teams of drivers from across the racing world compete in a 3.56-mile combined road course. Winners of the race receive specially-engraved Daytona watches.
“The 24 hours of Daytona holds a special weight with me watching it for so many years growing up. We have a very strong driver lineup heading into America’s great endurance race. Looking forward to getting down to Florida and going Rolex hunting.” said Root, a senior at Pepperdine University.
The Rolex 24 at Daytona is one of the marquee races in the world,” said Johnson, who called his Rolex teammates “three world class drivers.”
