BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) -Happy New Year, everyone! 2021 will be getting off to a great start with lots of sunshine today and above normal temperatures.
Things go downhill quickly tonight, though. A messy storm system will be moving in from our SW during the mid-to-late evening hours. Heavy, wet snow will move northward, overspreading our region by midnight. The snow could come down hard & heavy at times in our northern areas overnight, but in the central & southern areas, the snow will be mixing with sleet, some freezing rain, and just plain rain. The precipitation will stay in the form of snow to the north.
The heavy, wet snow will continue in our northern areas throughout Saturday morning, with a bit of sleet mixed in. Our central areas will continue to see that mixed precipitation, and our far southern counties will be getting just plain rain. During the afternoon, everything will change over to snow showers, which will be tapering off by late afternoon & evening.
A widespread 3-6″ of that heavy, wet snow can be expected by the end of Saturday in our northern areas, with some higher amounts in the higher elevations. 1-3″ of snow will do it for our central & southern ares where the mixing will occur.
Sunday will start out with some sunshine, but an upper-air disturbance will clip us late Sunday into Monday with a “bonus” layer of snow . . . a couple of inches is possible with that system. A few snow showers may linger into Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday are looking quiet, but there will be lots of clouds around.
Temperatures will be staying pretty steady over the next week or so, with highs in the mid-30s and lows in the mid-20s, which is a good deal above normal for this time of year.
Have a great 2021, and take it easy on the roads this weekend! -Gary
