The Atlanta Braves got another impressive performance from Max Fried to help them to a 11-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday afternoon.
The Braves got to Rays starter Ryan Yarbrough in the second inning. Travis d’Arnaud singled with one out then moved all the way to third on a throwing error by Mike Zunino on a tapper by Dansby Swanson. Jake Lamb brought them both home with a soft single to center to put Atlanta up 2-0.
D’Arnaud brought home two more in the third with a line drive single to center that scored both Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies. Swanson followed with his first home run of the spring to extend the lead to 6-0.
Yarbrough would exit after Swanson’s homer after allowing five hits and six runs in 2 2/3 innings. Yacksel Rios recorded the final out of the third inning but in a spring training twist, was replaced by Yarbrough again in the fourth who returned for some extra work. He retired four straight batters and would exit again after getting Freddie Freeman to pop out to lead off the fifth inning.
Fried turned in another brilliant performance allowing just three hits and one run over six innings. He struck out five and did not walk anyone. The lone run came on a solo home run by Ryan Boldt in the third inning. Fried appears to have put himself in position to get the Opening day start for Atlanta.
The Braves added three more runs in the seventh. Abraham Almonte worked a leadoff walk and then advanced to third on a ground rule double by Ehire Adrianza. Almonte scored on a deep drive by Pablos Sandoval. After a walk to Phillip Ervin and a fly out by William Contreras, Ryan Goins brought home Adrianza and Ervin on a single to right to extend the lead to 9-1.
Carl Edwards Jr. allowed a couple of hits and struck out one in a scoreless seventh. A.J. Minter pitched around a walk in a scoreless eighth.
Atlanta added two more runs in the ninth as Adrianza hit yet another double, moved over to third on a passed ball and then came home on a sacrifice fly by Phillip Ervin. William Contreras then mashed a home run off Hunter Strickland to cap the scoring at 11-1.
Jacob Webb allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
D’Arnaud was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Swanson was 1-for-3 with a homer and scored two runs. Adrianza was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and is now hitting .478 with a 1.383 OPS this spring. He is making it hard to leave him off the Opening Day roster. Goins also had two hits for Atlanta. On the pitching side, four Braves pitchers combined to allow five hits and just one run. They struck out seven and walked just one.
The Braves will be back in action on Monday with Kyle Wright scheduled to be on the mound against the Minnesota Twins.
