Max Griffin only learned just hours before UFC Vegas 22 started that he would be serving as the co-main event but he definitely made the most of that opportunity.
Following a back-and-forth start to the fight, Griffin blasted Song Kenan with a straight right hand down the middle and then followed with two more punches that absolutely flattened the Chinese welterweight and sent him face first to the canvas. Song was out before he even hit the floor as the referee rushed into stop the contest with the end coming at 2:20 into the opening round.
“I feel great. I had a gang of fun,” Griffin said after nearly being brought to tears after learning he would be the co-main event. “I had to hold in the emotions. I’m a star and the world’s going to see it. It doesn’t get bigger than this.”
Griffin came sprinting out of the gate, throwing big, heavy shots as if he wanted that highlight reel finish under the spotlight in Las Vegas. At first, Song was able to weather the storm as he avoided most of Griffin’s offense before firing back with his own counter punches from the outside.
The aggressive attack didn’t stop as Griffin continued to pursue Song across the octagon, first working from clinch and then moving forward with powerful combinations.
That’s when Griffin stepped into a perfectly timed right hand thrown straight at the chin and Song was immediately on wobbly legs. The next two punches thrown ended the fight with Griffin clipping Song with a left hand and then putting him down and out with the right.
Griffin celebrated his handiwork while earning his second consecutive finish in the UFC but he wasted no time turning his attention towards a top 15 opponent with hopes of competing again in May.
“I heard that they’re going to Houston. The UFC’s going to Houston,” Griffin said when referencing UFC 262. “He’s my boy but Geoff Neal, he’s from Texas. That would be lit.”
