It was another busy Saturday in the National Hockey League, as we had a total of 12 games, or 24 of the 31 teams in action. Unlike last week, though, we had a lot more defense and a few giant goaltender performances. Last Saturday we saw 82 total goals, or 6.83 goals per game, but this week we had just 67 total goals, or 5.58 goals per game. Fantasy managers and DFS players still saw a few big performances. We also saw a total of 17,564 spectators in five separate arenas, as we slowly spring forward out of the global pandemic which has gripped the world for over a calendar year now. Let's get started!
New York Rangers 4, Boston Bruins 0
The Rangers were heavy underdogs against the Bruins, and Jaroslav Halak had two shutouts in his two previous appearances against the Blueshirts this season. But Keith Kinkaid decided that the tables needed to be turned.
The former Devils backup backstop stopped all 18 of the shots he faced in the matinee battle to improve to 1-1-0 with a 1.53 GAA and .933 SV%.
The big fantasy studs were Pavel Buchnevich and Chris Kreider, as they picked up a goal and an assist each, while Mike Zibanejad was good for a pair of helpers. All three finished with a plus-3 rating. Brendan Lemieux also chipped in with 12 penalty minutes, while Phil Di Giuseppe posted four hits.
Every one of New York's six rearguards had a plus-1 or better, and Ryan Lindgren, K'Andre Miller, Brenden Smith and Jacob Trouba also had two or more hits. Trouba also had three blocked shots.
Columbus Blue Jackets 4, Dallas Stars 3 (OT)
We had a seesaw affair in the Metroplex, and we had seven different goal scorers.
Max Domi kicked off the scoring midway through the first period, but Elvis Merzlikins couldn't hold the lead, as Andrew Cogliano leveled the game 1-1 after 20.
Andrej Sekera scored his first of the season, with Cogliano chipping in with secondary helper for his second point of the game. Cam Atkinson tied the game again, however, with Domi adding his second point with a secondary apple. Nick Foligno gave Columbus its second lead of the day to close out the second period.
Denis Gurianov had other plans in the third period, tying the game at 3-3 and then the defenses took over. Overtime was needed, and it was Zach Werenski beating Jake Oettinger for the winner.
Pittsburgh Penguins 3, Buffalo Sabres 0
Carter Hutton allowed just one goal on 32 shots, but that wasn't good enough to prevent him from slipping to 1-8-1 with a 3.15 GAA and .893 SV%.
The toothless Sabres offensive attack couldn't solve Casey DeSmith, who posted his fifth-career shutout. It was his first shutout since March 24, 2019, which also came against the Sabres.
Jake Guentzel posted the power-play goal, the only score in regulation against Hutton, while Sidney Crosby and Mark Jankowski chipped in with empty-net goals.
New York Islanders 3, New Jersey Devils 2
The Devils fired out to an early lead, as Pavel Zacha scored his seventh goal of the season to beat Semyon Varlamov. Oliver Wahlstrom posted an unassisted goal late to tie it up before heading to the room.
Janne Kuokkanen gave the Devs another lead just 64 seconds into the second period with help from Yegor Sharangovich and Travis Zajac, and New Jersey took a 2-1 lead to the room after 40.
It wouldn't last, and Kieffer Bellows was a huge reason why. He scored his first two goals of the season to make the difference against Mackenzie Blackwood. Oddly enough, Bellows has four career goals in 17 NHL games, with a pair of two-goal games. He also had two markers Feb. 6, 2020 against the L.A. Kings. It helped the Isles to their eighth straight victory.
Washington Capitals 5, Philadelphia Flyers 4
The Caps and Flyers had the fantasy fiesta of the day, as we had a little bit of everything.
Daniel Sprong and Carl Hagelin posted the unlikely offense in the first period. Nick Jensen also had a goal early in the second, just his second of the season.
For the Fly Guys, James van Riemsdyk and Nolan Patrick scored in the second period, and we had plenty of goals early on. Things slowed down a bit before Alex Ovechkin got on the board with a power-play marker.
Brian Elliott ended up allowing three goals on just 10 shots and he was pulled in favor of Carter Hart. Ilya Samsonov wasn't great in the other crease, but he did enough to pick up the road win.
Tampa Bay Lightning 6, Nashville Predators 3
The Lightning also spread the offensive wealth around, as six different scorers etched their names onto the scoresheet.
Tyler Johnson and Mathieu Joseph got the party started against Pekka Rinne in the first period, and Alex Killorn added a power-play goal early in the second. Erik Cernak helped out on both of the first-period markers.
Yakov Trenin had the only offensive production of note for the Preds, posting a goal and an assist.
It was 4-1 heading to the third, but Alexandre Carrier and Erik Haula made things interesting, cutting the lead to 4-3 before Blake Coleman and Anthony Cirelli added goals to help double up the Preds.
It was more than enough support for Andrei Vasilevskiy, who stopped 28 of 31 shots.
Cernak had two helpers, Blake Coleman and Johnson had a goal and an assist each and Ondrej Palat had two helpers to head up the multi-point club.

Florida Panthers 4, Chicago Blackhawks 2
It looked like we might have a goaltender duel, as Sergei Bobrovsky and Kevin Lankinen exchanged zeroes in the first 20 minutes.
Brandon Hagel opened the scoring 28 seconds into the second to give Chicago a brief lead. However, Aleksander Barkov, Carter Verhaeghe and Frank Vatrano each scored their 10th goals of the season to give Florida a 3-1 lead at the second intermission.
Sasha Barkov was back with another goal, helped out by Verhaeghe, and Anthony Duclair also had a second assist.
It was well after the game was decided, but Adam Boqvist scored his second, and the highlight was Patrick Kane notching his 30th assist of the season.
Winnipeg Jets 5, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
Like we saw in Florida, the Jets and Leafs combined for a scoreless first period. Laurent Brossoit and Frederik Andersen looked like they might be in line for a special night. Then the second period happened.
Mason Appleton scored his eighth with help from Adam Lowry and Andrew Copp. Jake Muzzin answered with a shorthanded goal, while William Nylander gave Toronto its only lead of the evening at 7:12 of the second. Paul Stastny fixed that with the equalizer, as Mark Scheifele notched his 24th assist and Logan Stanley had his first apple.
In the third it was all Jets. Lowry posted his second point of the night, and Appleton added an assist with Dylan DeMelo also contributing. Nikolaj Ehlers was then back on the power play with Neal Pionk adding his 20th assist and Copp grabbing his second point. Scheifele then put a bow on the scoring with a PPG, and Blake Wheeler and Josh Morrissey joined the party with assists.
Calgary Flames 3, Montreal Canadiens 1
The Flames saw Sean Monahan pick up an even-strength goal and a score on the power play, as Carey Price couldn't keep him off the board. Mikael Backlund made it 3-0 with help from Andrew Mangiapane and Milan Lucic.
Only Jeff Petry, who scored his 11th goal of the season, was able to beat Jacob Markstrom. The latter stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced, improving to 10-7-2 with a 2.67 GAA and .911 SV% in 19 starts.
Vegas Golden Knights 5, St. Louis Blues 1
Head coach Peter DeBoer decided to go with Marc-Andre Fleury for the second time in two days. The move paid off big time.
Shea Theodore scored at 4:01 of the first period with help from William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault, beating Ville Husso, the backup giving Jordan Binnington a breather.
Things settled down until third period before the offense picked back up. It was great news if you had fantasy stock in Vegas offense for DFS. It bad news if you were holding an Under ticket on the total.
Mark Stone scored two goals in the final period, while Theodore had an assist, his second point of the night. Max Pacioretty also had a goal and three points in the third period, while Chandler Stephenson picked up two helpers. That was more than enough for Fleury, who won both ends of the back-to-back in St. Louis.
Vancouver Oilers 2, Edmonton Oilers 1
We had another scoreless first period in Vancouver, a common theme on the night. This one ended up being low scoring all the way across the board, too.
Mikko Koskinen was on the short end of the 2-1 score, allowing two goals on 28 shots. Thatcher Demko was just a little bit better with 34 saves and just one goal allowed.
Bo Horvat and Leon Draisaitl exchanged power-play goals in the second, and Tyler Myers was the difference maker with an even-strength goal at 9:23 of the third, as Nils Hoglander and Jordie Benn helped out.
San Jose Sharks 3, Anaheim Ducks 1
In SoCal it was another low-scoring game, as Martin Jones got well against the Ducks.
Jones allowed just one goal on 27 shots, outperforming Ryan Miller, who had 30 saves on 33 shots.
The offense was spread evenly, as Evander Kane had his 11th goal of the season, with Kevin Labanc and Dylan Gambrell also getting on the board. Tomas Hertl, Mario Ferraro, John Leonard and Ryan Donato each added assists.
For the Ducks, only Max Jones was able to break through, while Isac Lundestrom and Kevin Shattenkirk had the only assists for the home side.
