Is the transfer portal good or bad for college football? That is up for debate. In the specific case of Max Wray, it highlights the positive side of the portal. Bucknuts.com Editor Dave Biddle, who covered Wray during his three years at Ohio State, explained the situation for BuffStampede.com.

"It got to the point where Max was just too good not to start. He can't just be a back-up," Biddle said. "He played off and on, but he got the one start at Michigan State this past year. Every coach has their own lingo and at Ohio State, if you grade out well enough they call you a 'Champion.' Max was named a Champion for that game that he started. He played really well.

"Ohio State has their two offensive tackle starters coming back - Thayer Munford and Nicholas Petit-Frere - which was unexpected. I thought Munford would definitely leave but he is coming back (as a Super Senior) and Petit-Frere could have turned pro. He was a third year player this past year. Ohio State also has Paris Johnson, who in my opinion, will be a future first-round pick at tackle. He was the No. 1 tackle in the country in the 2020 class but they're having to play him at guard this year just because there is not a starting tackle spot for him yet. And then Ohio State also has a pretty good back-up swing tackle/guard named Dawand Jones. So there just wasn't room for Max."

Ohio State also had a lot of talent on the interior of its offensive line during the 2020 season. Center Josh Myers was a second-round pick by the Green Bay Packers and guard Wyatt Davis was a third-round selection by the Minnesota Vikings during the recent NFL Draft.

Wray committed to transfer to Colorado this past Sunday. He will join his younger brother Jake Wray, a former Buffs offensive lineman that was forced to medically retire this spring due to ongoing issues with his back. Jake is still at student in Boulder and has started to assist the Buffaloes' video team.

"With Max having three years of eligibility remaining, Colorado is getting a nice steal," Biddle said. "It's a good get for Colorado. It would have been a good get for any program. Ohio State really liked him. It was a luxury to have him primarily as a back-up last year. From everything I've been told, it was just Max wanting to play and the (Ohio State) coaches wished him well. There was no animosity as far as I know."

Before his time in Columbus, Wray was ranked among the nation's top 80 prospects and top seven offensive tackle recruits coming out of Franklin (Tenn.) High. He chose the Buckeyes over a number of other prestigious programs, including Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Miami, Texas, Texas A&M and USC.

Wray redshirted with the Buckeyes in 2018. In addition to his start against the Spartans, he saw action in nine games as a back-up at Ohio State in 2019 and 2020.

Wray will compete for a starting offensive tackle job in Boulder this summer with Frank Fillip, Noah Fenske, Jake Wiley and Gerad Lichtenhan.
