Congratulations, Max Muncy. As most of you saw, Muncy hit the 100th home run of his career yesterday afternoon. It was his 95th homer with the Dodgers, as this is his fourth season with the club.

Now reaching the 100 home run milestone isn’t an uncommon occurrence in baseball. There are currently 940 players who have reached that number in MLB history. Having recently surpassed the 20,000 player milestone last week, that means nearly 1 out of every 20 players has hit at least 100 homers.

However, very few of them have the kind of story Muncy has.

As you all remember, Muncy was designated for assignment by the Athletics back in January of 2017. During his time with Oakland, he hit .195 with only five home runs. In April of 2017, the Dodgers signed him to a minor-league deal. He spent all of 2017 in the minors for the Dodgers, before making his team debut on April 17, 2018. Since then, he’s been one of the best hitters in all of baseball.

Here are Muncy’s MLB ranks since the start of the 2018 campaign:

• 95 home runs (7th)
• 232 RBI (28th)
• .521 slugging percentage (20th)
• .382 wOBA (13th)
• 143 wRC+ (10th)
• 13.2 fWAR (16th)

Muncy has legitimately been a top 20-25 player in all of baseball since he was called up by the Dodgers. Again, this was a guy who was DFA’d by a team, spent a year in the minors and then joined the Dodgers as a 27-year-old. He wasn’t a highly-touted prospect really ever, and when he got his shot with Oakland he simply wasn’t that good of a baseball player.

It really is crazy how he’d completely turned his career around, and he appears to only be getting better. Him reaching the 100 home run milestone isn’t something he or the Dodgers could have imagined when they signed him (I’m guessing).

I just had to write this to congratulate Muncy. It truly is an amazing accomplishment. Here’s to 100 more!
