'Pennyworth': HBO Max, Epix May Share DC Comics Drama for Season 3 - Hollywood Reporter

Discussions between WarnerMedia, which owns the show, and the MGM-backed premium cable network are under way for a potential third season of the Bruno Heller series.

Pennyworth may have not one but two homes when (and if) it returns for a third season.

The Bruno Heller drama about the early days of Batman's butler may wind up being shared between Epix, the MGM-backed premium cable network that has been the show's home for its first two seasons, and HBO Max, the streaming sibling of Pennyworth studio Warner Bros. Television.

Sources say Epix and HBO Max will likely end up sharing Pennyworth, with the streamer getting the first window to season three. Epix would air the third season of the Jack Bannon starrer at a later date. HBO Max would be home to the first two seasons of Pennyworth, with Epix also having the right to air repeats of the drama about the former British SAS soldier who goes to work for a young billionaire named Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge).

Reps for Epix, Warners and HBO Max declined comment as a deal has not yet been closed.

Sources say Epix executives had yet to make a decision on the future of Pennyworth, which wrapped its 10-episode second season April 11, when execs from HBO Max reached out with the offer to take over the series as an original.

Epix, under president Michael Wright, has been growing its originals business with Godfather of Harlem, Bridge and Tunnel, Belgravia, Audience Network import Condor and Stephen King entry Chapelwaite. Wright, who recently added oversight of MGM TV to his purview, has launched a number of scripted originals that hail from both MGM TV and outside studios.

Should a deal be worked out that would see Pennyworth get a second linear window on Epix, the premium cable network would likely pay a reduced licensing fee for the series that would help free up funds for other originals as Wright continues to build up the cabler's roster.
HBO Max, meanwhile, would bring another DC Comics-inspired drama to its platform. The streamer, which turns a year old this month, has a swelling roster of DC originals coming from mega-producers J.J. Abrams (Justice League Dark), Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern), Matt Reeves (The Batman spinoff) and James Gunn (Suicide Squad offshoot Peacemaker). The platform is also home to DC Universe imports Harley Quinn, Titans and Doom Patrol and has a second window for The CW's DC fare Batwoman and Superman & Lois.

Deadline was first to report news that Pennyworth could become an HBO Max original.
