According to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, Max Verstappen is pretty much plug-and-play for a team manager who says the Dutch star does not feel the pressure of the 2021 Formula 1 title fight against Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes.
Speaking to RN365, Horner said ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort this weekend: “I think Max is always relaxed. He’s 23 and the pressure doesn’t seem to exist that much.
“He’s in good shape and he’s obviously been training hard, preparing for this race and all the other races with great care and attention. He’s ready to go. You don’t have to say a great deal to Max. With him, the picture is usually pretty clear. He’s a very easy guy to work with.”
Another ‘home race’ for the Bulls – they also have ‘home races’ in Austria aka Styria and Britain – Zandvoort returns to the calendar with 70,000 fans expected each day at the seaside venue, which returns for the first time since 1985.
“The biggest challenge will be to squeeze through the huge crowds,” said Horner of the weekend ahead.
“We are looking forward to racing on a new track. It is a tight and twisty track, which puts the emphasis on qualifying and having track position. And of course, we have to hope that the weather is a bit more friendly than a few days ago.
“So everything is good, we’re looking forward to racing. I think the atmosphere is going to be fantastic. I think that the support that we’ve seen for Max, wherever we go in the world, there’s always an orange grandstand.
“For us, it’s like another home race, so I’m excited to come and see the circuit, the atmosphere and hopefully we can put a good show,” added Horner.
Verstappen, obviously, cannot wait to play to his loving fans and race at Zandvoort, after all the race was scheduled for last year until COVID-19 scuppered those plans.
He said in a Tweet: “After the race was cancelled last year this year will be even more special, and it would be amazing to win on another home circuit in front of the Orange Army.”
Now, heading home, after 12 rounds Verstappen trails Hamilton at the top of the drivers’ championship by three points, while Red Bull trail Mercedes by seven in the constructors’ standings.
