  • The iPhone 13 Pro Max is essentially a bigger version of the iPhone 13 Pro, as both have the same cameras.
  • The biggest difference is battery life, where the iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted four hours more in our test.
  • The larger screen is nice, but it means the phone is heavier and less comfortable to use.

In a positive move, Apple gave its iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max more parity in the camera department, making the choice between the smaller and larger models an easier one to make.

Indeed, Apple often gave its larger models more camera tech, as was the case with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. But now that both the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are essentially identical in features, it's now simply a matter of preference for screen size and battery life.

With that said, there are a couple areas where the iPhone 12 Pro Max outperforms the iPhone 13 Pro purely due to its larger size — namely in battery life.

Our iPhone 13 Pro review covers most of the bases for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, including camera performance, performance overall, and display quality, as both models are so similar. However, we've highlighted the major differences below.

The iPhone 13 Pro's larger screen is nice, but there are caveats

The iPhone 13 Pro Max's extra size and weight doesn't impact its portability, but it may not be the most comfortable option for some.

For one, it's harder to reach certain items, especially those on the top left or right of the screen. And typing out a message or email is also more of a chore than it is on the smaller iPhone 13 Pro, as it requires extra thumb reach and movement, especially with swipe typing. Using the iPhone 13 Pro Max one-handed is do-able, but it's more comfortable with both hands on the phone.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max's weight is another noteworthy aspect. Weighing in at 240 grams compared to the iPhone 13 Pro's 204 grams, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is pretty heavy. Those who actively like larger screens and are used to Apple's larger phones won't be too bothered, but it'll be something to get used to if you're used to smaller phones.

It's all to say that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is perfectly comfortable to use if it's all you know, but when you switch back and forth with the iPhone 13 Pro like I did, it's easier to see that the smaller and lighter iPhone 13 Pro offers a slightly more comfortable experience overall.

If you want the longest battery life, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the one to get

In our battery test, the iPhone 13 Pro Max streamed a continuous video at full screen brightness for a whopping 20 hours and 18 minutes. That's about four hours longer than the iPhone 13 Pro, and about six hours longer than the standard iPhone 13 in the same test.

That's five hours short of Apple's claim of 25 hours for video streaming , and real-life testing more often than not comes short of manufacturer claims. Regardless, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has the best battery life we've tested on any smartphone so far — it's almost four hours longer-lasting than Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Otherwise, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is essentially a bigger version of the iPhone 13 Pro

Real-life performance is identical, even if our benchmarking tests with Geekbench 5 reveal a slightly higher score for single and multi-core performance. It's only about 50 extra points overall in the benchmark test, which doesn't make much of a difference.

We're also happy to find that the iPhone 13 Pro Max has an identical camera system as the iPhone 13 Pro, so you won't get penalized for preferring smaller phones.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max makes sense if you prefer large screens or you want the longest battery life you can possibly get.

The $1,100 iPhone 13 Pro Max costs $100 more than the iPhone 13 Pro. That $100 premium essentially gets you a larger screen and the best battery life you can get on a phone. If either or both of these aspects that are exclusive to the iPhone 13 Pro Max matter to you, it's the iPhone 13 you should get — as long as your budget allows for it.

Pros: Supreme battery life, excellent cameras, excellent performance, 120Hz variable refresh rate screen, ceramic shield glass is very scratch resistant

Cons: Pricey, no fast charger included
