Baseball players get injured every year, which sucks, but it’s going to be watched so much more closely this year given the pandemic. That meant starting up and shutting down, trying to stay in game shape without the ability to be at facilities, and then rapidly ramping back up for a season. I’m not at all saying that every injury that happens this year is related to the funky season, but it’s impossible not to think about it.
To that end, a guy who never gets hurt left his start early tonight with an apparent injury:
Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer left his start for the Nationals against the Mets after just one inning. https://t.co/ARjN4bFGSW

Max Scherzer is coming out of this game after one inning. Erick Fedde will come in. Scherzer was in the Nats’ dugout during the bottom of the first while they were hitting. He never does that. Always goes down into the tunnel. Grabbed his glove a minute ago and went inside.

Per MASN, Scherzer’s velocity was noticeably down in his long inning of work, and he was not throwing with his typical max effort.
Until last season, Scherzer, 36, had made at least 30 starts every year for the last decade. He is as durable as it gets, though obviously he’s getting up there in years. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, because the guy is obviously one of the pitching stars of the league. Nobody wants to see him missing serious time this year.
UPDATE: At least it’s not the arm, though even a minor hamstring issue can easily cost a player 2 to 4 weeks:
Max Scherzer calls his hamstring injury "minor'' and should return soon.
