The TriMet project to improve Blue Line service will last until Sunday, May 23.
TriMet MAX riders need to plan ahead because crews will begin making rail improvements in Northeast Portland starting on Saturday, May 15.
MAX Blue, Green and Red lines will be disrupted and no trains will be running between Northeast 7th Avenue and the Gateway Transit Center from Saturday, through Sunday, May 23.
Impacts will also be felt elsewhere, with no Green or Red line trains running west of the Gateway Transit Center.
During the project, shuttle buses will be serving stations between Northeast 7th Avenue and the Gateway Transit Center. Due to the length of the route, riders should plan an extra 30 minutes for their trips, or, if possible, use alternative means of transportation if traveling through that area.
According to TriMet, these improvements will rebuild part of the trackway along I-84 near the Northeast 33rd Avenue overpass. Crews will also replace the rail crossing at the north end of the Gateway Transit Center, where buses drive over the tracks.
TriMet strongly recommends that MAX riders check out trimet.org/improvements to find the shuttle bus map and project details ahead of time to get a sense of what the disruption will mean for them.
During the project, crews will replace a 1,300-foot section of rail eastbound and westbound, for a total of 2,600 feet of new rail, TriMet said. They will also strip out hundreds of wooden crossties — the perpendicular beams that help support tracks — and replace them with new and innovative versions made of concrete. This new type of tie has only been used once before in the United States and is expected to offer greater durability and more flexibility in how TriMet uses them.
