Today is one of my favorite days of the year — the day the Spokesman-Review drops its college football preview, which is packed with lots of interesting stories that are an amalgamation of all the information gleaned from the sometimes-mundane task of covering practices for a month.
As usual, the package doesn’t disappoint. And it includes an insightful feature of Washington State’s stud running back Max Borghi.
To be truthful, these profiles often include pretty vanilla quotes from their subjects, but that’s not the case from Borghi. It’s not scorched-earth stuff by any means, but he also was pretty transparent about how he’s feeling heading into the season, particularly with regards to the opportunity the Run and Shoot provides for him to showcase his skills.
“There were times I was questioning my choice and a little frustrated running the ball two times a game. I’m like, ‘What did I do?’” Borghi said. “I’m definitely very grateful for my decision and I think this was all in God’s plan. … To be honest I don’t know if I would’ve stayed sane being in the Air Raid for four years straight, but I was glad honestly to see that I’m going to get the opportunity to run the ball more in the run-and-shoot.”
A critic may be quick to point out the obvious: didn’t Borghi understand what he was getting into when he signed on to be an Air Raid running back in 2017?
“I didn’t realize it was going to be just checked runs. I thought it was actually drawn run plays in the playbook, but I learned quickly,” he said. “I’m grateful for all that opportunity I had under Leach. I think I really excelled my game and was able to show a lot of stuff I wouldn’t be able to show right now.”
It’s safe to say most fans are as excited to see Borghi take a primary role as he is to be in one. Last time we saw him in a game, he was picking up nearly 10 yards per carry; last time we saw him in a full season, he was picking up nearly 7 yards per touch — including 6.4 yards per carry on those 127 “checked runs.”
We thought we were going to get it last year, but a back injury sidelined him. One persistent worry I’ve not been able to let go of is just the idea of a “back injury,” and how those can be pretty serious — and debilitating. However, Borghi insists that he only missed as much time as he did last season out of an abundance of caution and an eye on the big picture of his career. Basically, he felt fine, but the training staff wanted to be as sure as possible that it didn’t become the kind of debilitating and chronic injury that could derail a promising professional career.
Now, he’s hoping to make his mark on the WSU record books and put his name up there with the likes of Reuben Mayes, Steve Broussard, Michael Black and Jerome Harrison.
“I think my legacy will draw itself up. I want to obviously be one of the best running backs to come out of this place,” he told Lawson. “I think with another good year and I stay humble, work hard and have a great season, I think it’s very doable. We’ve had some very great guys in the running backs room, but I definitely want to get my name up on that wall so I can have my name there forever.”
Nick Rolovich sued by Kassidy Woods

If you’ve followed the story at all, there aren’t really any surprise allegations other than the fact that it also paints AD Pat Chun in a pretty unfavorable light. It does detail the extent to which Woods was cut off from the team following his COVID opt-out, which Woods clearly feels was capricious and unnecessary.

Woods’ lawsuit, which was filed on Aug. 20 in the player’s home state of Texas, claims “Rolovich’s acts were racist, intentional, malicious, willful, and in gross and reckless disregard of Woods’ constitutional rights.”
