Max Scherzer earned the Players Choice Award for the 2021 National League Outstanding Pitcher.
Scherzer was voted by his Major League Baseball peers to take home the award honoring baseball’s top pitcher for the third time in his career.
“That means a lot,” Scherzer said in a video posted by the MLB Players Association. “To be selected by the players as the best pitcher, you face these guys, and that just shows you they have a level of respect for you to recognize you as the best. So that really does mean a lot to me.”
The three-time Cy Young Award winner is in contention for another after going 15–4 with a 2.46 ERA, Major League best 0.86 WHIP and 236 strikeouts in 179 1/3 innings between the Nationals and Dodgers. Scherzer went 7–0 with a 1.98 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings with the Dodgers after being acquired at the deadline. The Dodgers won each of his 11 regular season starts.
He amassed a 0.78 ERA with 79 strikeouts and seven walks in his first nine starts with the team. He also hit a milestone marker, becoming the 19th pitcher ever to record at least 3,000 career strikeouts.
