Braves pitcher Max Fried has never made a World Series start. He’ll do so in Game 2 on Wednesday but approaches it like any other outing.
“At the end of the day, it’s still baseball,” the lefthander said Tuesday. “You’ve got to be able to throw the ball where you want and keep hitters off-balance. If you really just trust what you do and stay within yourself, that’s going to be plenty good enough.”
Fried, 27, has been plenty good for a couple seasons now. He went 14-7 with a 3.04 ERA in 2021 after going 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA in the truncated 2020 campaign.
In three postseason starts this year, Fried is 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA in 16 2/3 innings. He beat the Brewers with six scoreless innings in Game 2 of the National League Division Series, received a no-decision in Atlanta’s NL Championship Series-opening win over the Dodgers, and took the loss in Game 5 of the NLCS.
The Braves haven’t played the Astros since 2017, but Fried isn’t unfamiliar with Houston’s deep lineup, which led the majors in batting average (.267) and on-base percentage (.339) this season.
“They take really good at-bats,” Fried said. “They’re going to make you throw strikes. They’re not going to chase a ton. They’ve obviously been here. They’ve been in the moment.”
By starting Fried in Game 2, the Braves won’t be able to take advantage of his hitting prowess in Games 3-5 at Atlanta’s Truist Park. Fried hit .273 this season and was even employed as a pinch hitter, going 2-for-2 in that role with a double, RBI, walk, and sacrifice.
