Action Park, an amusement park in Vernon, N.J., that opened in 1978, was notorious for bruises, scars, broken bones and even death — in a single week in 1982, two people died on extreme water rides. Starting next month, HBO Max will stream a documentary about it, “Class Action Park,” that was produced and directed by Chris Charles Scott and Seth Porges.

Mr. Porges, a former editor at Maxim and Popular Mechanics magazines, saw Action Park as a subject for investigative journalism, interviewing dozens of adults who had gone there as teenagers (and survived). He unearthed documents and recordings to describe how those who went to Action Park had “free rein to go gonzo on strange contraptions that seemed to violate the laws of common sense, and perhaps physics.”

Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original content, said that the documentary “brings feelings of nostalgia even if you didn’t grow up going to this infamous New Jersey amusement park.”
