Miller's long-awaited fourth addition to the post-apocalyptic action franchise Mad Max blew audiences away when it arrived on our screens in 2015. A propulsive chase movie, Fury Road was another standalone Mad Max story that managed to marry a timely message of its heroes saving a parched environment from a demented fascist cult with some of the most impressive adrenaline-fuelled action sequences in cinema. A central figure in the film's success was Furiosa, played to icy perfection by Charlize Theron, who was the film's true protagonist with Tom Hardy's jittery reinterpretation of the titular scavenger tossed into her bitter, longstanding battle against Immortan Joe.
Despite Furiosa being a rare amputee action lead, her disability is never addressed in the film and has prompted plenty of fan speculation as a result. So how did Furiosa lose her arm, and why does the film never address the story? Unlike the villainous Immortan Joe, there's no comic book prequel backstory for the character's lost limb. But according to an interview with Theron, Miller informed her that there is an interesting story behind Furiosa's missing arm. It's widely accepted that the arm was lost in battle after the character became an Imperator, but it's why it wasn't included that's important.
Interestingly, the film never explicitly states how she became an amputee to avoid this detail overshadowing her personality and defining her character. In another interview, Theron clarified why Furiosa's apparent disability is never mentioned in the film. As the actor herself put it when speaking of Furiosa, "She is. Not because of: she is." The character refusing to be defined by her disability is an idea that resonated with many film fans. Since the days of the forever-feuding Schwarzenegger and Stallone he-man heroes of the eighties, action cinema has been routinely and reasonably criticized for promoting unrealistic body images and, while the escapist fantasy is part of the genre's appeal, Furiosa's strength is a moving reminder that there are no barriers to entering the action hero hall of fame.
Furiosa's character was praised more broadly by critics who noted that not only was her status as an amputee never dwelled upon to the point that it defined the character, but her tough and uncompromising attitude wasn't softened any more than Max's own. Although the character is humanized by the film's pulse-pounding close, she's one of the hardiest cast members and a believably intense presence throughout the film, with Furiosa and the eponymous madman leaving romantic subplots to the younger, more minor side characters. It's no surprise that Fury Road is often ranked as the best Mad Max movie, as the film managed to diversify the action genre without succumbing to tokenism or clumsy pandering.
