For the second time this season, Ed Orgeron will give a true freshman quarterback his first career start.

On Saturday, in the hours leading up to kickoff, Orgeron confirmed the Tigers would start Max Johnson at quarterback against Florida. Orgeron revealed the final decision to LSU sideline reporter Gordy Rush during pre-game.

Johnson, whose father Brad Johnson played for Florida State, will now get his first career start against the Gators in The Swamp.

Johnson has seen extended playing time in three games this season, each time coming off the bench for starting quarterback TJ Finley. Finley, also a true freshman, had replaced injured quarterback Myles Brennan as LSU's starter over the past three games.

In the three games Johnson came off the bench, he completed 40-of-63 attempts (64%) for 395 yards, two touchdowns and had no interceptions.

"I thought Max had a good showing when he went in there," Orgeron said this week of Johnson's second half showing against Alabama a week ago, when he finished with 172 yards and one touchdown on 15-for-24 pass attempts. "He moved the ball and looked crisp."

Ahead of his first college start, Johnson will have one thing working in his favor: Gainesville won't be at full capacity.

"Obviously playing in The Swamp is going to be new for every young player, but I think those guys are ready to handle it," Orgeron said. "Not having 100,000 people doing the Gator chomp is going to be an advantage for us."

LSU, now 3-5 on the season with two games remaining, will face off against a high-powered Florida offense that has the Gators sitting in the playoff hunt as the SEC East Champion and No. 6 team in the polls.

Dan Mullen is a great offensive mind. Kyle Trask has done a tremendous job, he’s very tough. The tight end Kyle Pitts is one of the best players we will see all year," Orgeron said. "They are a good football team. They are very athletic up front and have an outstanding pass rush. This is going to be a challenge, and we will be up for it.”

LSU and Florida are set to face off at 6 p.m. CST on ESPN.
