The Braves once again find themselves only one game behind .500, at 43-44 overall. With two games left before the all-star break, the Braves will either end up breaking the glass ceiling and ending above .500 with a sweep of Miami, or end up below .500 at the break with two losses or a split, which would highlight what has been a very disappointing season so far.
Max Fried will be sent out to the mound for Atlanta, and Fried has had an odd season so far. His ERA is an ugly 4.66, but a 4.02 FIP and 4.00 xFIP are indicators that the ERA is a bit inflated. HIs strikeout rate has ticked back up to around 9 K/9 (8.91) this season, after seeing a dip last season and his walk rate is about the same. His home run rate has rebounded back to a more normal level as well, after sitting at a miniscule spot last season. Fried has been mostly good this season with about four games in which he got rocked and has zero games with no earned runs allowed.
The Marlins will counter Fried with their Rookie of the Year candidate pitcher, in Trevor Rogers. Rogers has been spectacular this season, with a 2.22 ERA, 2.50 FIP, and 3.30 xFIP. Rogers is one of the favorites for the Rookie of the Year award and will be a challenging matchup for a talent-sapped Atlanta offense. One useful feature of Rogers that might help the Braves is that he is a lefty, and Ozzie notoriously rakes against lefty hitters.
As we keep needing to say, the Marlins hit Acuna again on Friday, and Ronald was quite mad after the Miami dugout started chirping, so there is the ever-present potential for some fireworks between the two teams if there is yet another ball thrown too far inside on the Braves MVP candidate.
