The race for the NL West crown could very well come down to the race for a Cy Young winner on a floundering team.
A Tuesday report from MLB.com's Mark Feinsand revealed that should Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer waive his no-trade clause, the 37-year-old “strongly prefers the West Coast” as far as possible destinations are concerned. Feinsand went on to note three teams of interest that could absolutely use Scherzer: the Giants, Dodgers and Padres.
San Francisco currently leads the NL West division in this three-horse race, with Los Angeles behind by two games, and San Diego even further behind (5.5 games as of Tuesday morning).
As for why a player like Scherzer might be available: The Washington Nationals are trending in the opposite direction as the three aforementioned West Coast contenders. While not completely out of the postseason race, the Nats are 5-15 over their past 20 games and are ahead of only the Miami Marlins in the NL East. However, their stink hasn't rubbed off on Scherzer, who went to his eighth career All Star game earlier this month and has a 2.83 ERA along with a career-best 0.89 WHIP.
The Giants could get an incredible addition to their team who would drastically increase their championship odds, but it's unknown whether they actually want to go that route. Their competition for Scherzer is immense; both the Dodgers and Padres have shown off their willingness to spend on talent in recent seasons. If the Giants want to hold onto their division lead and make it to October, it might be time to pony up some serious assets.
The MLB trade deadline is Friday, July 30, at 1 p.m.
