From Yu Darvish in 2017 to Manny Machado in 2018, the Dodgers haven’t been bashful about adding to their roster at the trade deadline when they see an opportunity. The latest move is one of the grandest they’ve made.

Trailing by three games in the division entering Friday’s deadline, the Dodgers bolstered their roster with another Cy Young Award winner in right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer and another All-Star position player in shortstop Trea Turner. They acquired the two Nationals players for top prospects Keibert Ruiz and Josiah Gray as well as prospects Gerardo Carrillo and Donovan Casey.

Scherzer and Turner become the sixth and seventh 2021 All-Stars on the Dodger roster, joining Walker Buehler, Max Muncy, Justin Turner, Chris Taylor and Mookie Betts.

In Scherzer, the Dodgers get a fourth Cy Young Award winner and a second three-time Cy Young Award winner in a stacked rotation that recently found itself shorthanded. Buehler and Julio Urías are the only members of the original five-man rotation currently available, with Clayton Kershaw on the mend, Trevor Bauer on administrative leave and fifth starter Dustin May out for the year. Kershaw is expected to return soon, possibly as early as next weekend against the Angels.

Scherzer immediately plugs in as another ace to alleviate the absences. The 37-year-old right-hander, who started the All-Star Game for manager Dave Roberts’ National League team, is 8–4 with a 2.76 ERA, career-best 0.89 WHIP and 147 strikeouts in 111 innings this year.

In Scherzer, Kershaw and David Price, the Dodger rotation features three of the top six active leaders in strikeouts. All three are also former Cy Young Award winners. Scherzer’s 2,931 career strikeouts rank second among all active pitchers behind only Justin Verlander’s 3,013.

For his career, Scherzer is 183–97 with a 3.19 ERA and 1.09 WHIP while averaging 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings. He averaged at least 12 strikeouts per nine innings each of his previous four seasons and is close again this year at 11.92 K/9. The eight-time All-Star won a World Series in 2019 and is 7–5 with a 3.38 ERA in his playoff career. He is in the final year of a seven-year deal that he signed in 2015.

Trea Turner, who is under team control through next season, made his first All-Star team this year after finishing seventh in NL MVP voting last season. The speedy 28-year-old is hitting .322/.369/.521 with 18 home runs and 21 stolen bases this year. He has logged all his time at shortstop the last five years, but he has also played second base and center field during his seven-year career. The former 2014 first-round pick, who is currently on the COVID-IL, is slashing .300/.356/.486 with 93 home runs for his career.

Ruiz, the Dodgers’ top prospect, has played in eight Major League games in his career going 3-for-15 with two home runs. The 23-year-old Venezuelan catcher homered in his first Major League at-bat last year. He has spent most of this year with Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .311/.381/.631 with 16 home runs. Ruiz has hit .300/.355/.447 with 45 homers in his six-year minor league career.

Gray, the Dodgers’ top pitching prospect, made his MLB debut on July 20 and has been in the Dodger rotation since. The former 2018 second-round pick of the Reds was 14–5 with a 2.41 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings in three minor league seasons. The Dodgers acquired him as part of the trade that sent Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood and Kyle Farmer to Cincinnati in 2019.

Carrillo, the Dodgers’ №17 overall prospect, was brought up to the 40-man roster last November. The 22-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico, has spent this season with Double-A Tulsa, going 3–2 with a 4.25 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings in his fourth minor league season.

Casey, a 20th-round pick of the Dodgers in 2017 out of Boston College, also spent this year with Tulsa. The outfielder hit .296/.362/.462 with 11 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 73 games. In four minor league seasons, Casey is a .286/.348/.474 hitter with 48 home runs, 54 doubles and 15 triples in 305 games.
