In a recent turn of events, the Houston Astros are exploring a trade for a starting pitcher, and it is no other than Max Scherzer. The eight-time All-Star is coming off his fourth start in an All-Star Game, while also being the ace for the Washington Nationals.
With the luxury tax threshold not restricting general manager James Click’s wants at the trade deadline, Scherzer is carrying a $34,503,480 contract. This number would be prorated to the day he is traded, if it happens. The idea of deferring the contract could also play in, as seen with Zack Greinke’s deal.

Earlier this month, I brought up the idea of looking into a starting pitcher like Scherzer. With Jake Odorizzi and Framber Valdez struggling to find a rhythm the last two games, there isn’t much rotational depth in the minor leagues, especially when it is needed with Jose Urquidy on the injured list.
With a 2.66 ERA over 98 innings this season, Scherzer has become a subject of discussion in trade talks, but it comes down to if the Nationals buy or sell. The trade would need to include top prospects from the Astros, even though Scherzer is set to be a free agent at the end of the season.
While still a dominant starter in the game, the 36-year-old could be exploring a deal that would lock him down until 40-years-old. Nothing more has been reported on what the Nationals are looking for, but it shows that the Astros’ front office is looking for a high-leverage piece at the deadline.
The Astros dropped game three with the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, 4-0. They travel home to open a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians at 7:10 p.m. with Zack Greinke off the rubber against right-hander J.C. Mejia.
