Max Duggan, TCU’s starting quarterback last season, remains sidelined after a procedure to correct a heart condition.

Matthew Downing, who was taking No. 1 offense snaps with Duggan out, has missed the last 10 days of practice.

And none of the other quarterbacks has taken take a huge step forward, coach Gary Patterson said on the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday.

If the assessment sounded a little grim, Patterson tried to soften things in a tweet a few minutes later.

“Everyone calm down and take a step back,” Patterson tweeted. “We have been in camp since the middle of July getting ready. The day we need to be ready is September 26th! Go Frogs!”

That said, things seem unsettled at best at quarterback ahead of the Big 12 opener against Iowa State.

Duggan has yet to receive a medical OK to return, Patterson said.

Downing, a Georgia transfer, could return soon. Patterson didn’t specify a reason for his absence but TCU was forced to cancel its opener with SMU by a COVID-19 outbreak on the team.

“Downing was one of the guys who’s been down here for about 10 days, so I can’t say,” Patterson said. “He’ll be back here in the next couple.”

Patterson said no one stepped up in Downing’s absence.

Texas Tech records 75 positive COVID-19 results among players

Since testing began at Texas Tech, 75 football players have tested positive for COVID-19 according to figures provided by the school Monday.

Six cases are listed as active, with 69 recoveries. Tech was reportedly minus at least a dozen players for its season opener with Houston Baptist.

There are no active cases among football staff members, with five recoveries.

According to Tech, the school has administered 2,861 tests for COVID-19 among its student-athletes, coaches and staff, with 116 total positive cases among student-athletes for all sports.

Texas receiver Jordan Whittington out 3-4 weeks with knee injury

Redshirt freshman receiver Jordan Whittington will miss 3-4 weeks with a knee injury, Herman said. Whittington suffered a small tear of his lateral meniscus in the season opener against UTEP and will have surgery this week.

Texas opens Big 12 play Sept. 26 at Texas Tech, followed by an Oct. 3 game with TCU.

Former Duncanville QB could play this year

Freshman quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson could play for Texas this season, coach Tom Herman said Monday.

The former Duncanville dual-threat standout suffered a knee injury during the high school playoffs. He has since been medically cleared for practice.

“I would think JJ would be the first to tell you, he’s not quite there yet from a confidence standpoint to go out and do the things that he does well,” Herman said.

“I think we’ll play that as it goes and just kind of judge by his confidence level. ... I’d like to get JJ into a game at some point, hopefully multiple games.”

Matt Wells ‘proud’ of Texas Tech despite narrow win

Coach Matt Wells took exception to a question on the Big 12 teleconference asking whether his players overlooked Houston Baptist in the season opener.

A 40-point favorite, Tech managed a 35-33 victory.

“There’s no ‘but’ about it. A win is a win, period,” Wells said, noting that it was his first close win at Tech after four losses by three points or less last season. “That was a big thing for us this offseason. We talked about it quite a bit. … So I’m proud of our guys.”
