Insecure may be ending but Issa Rae is already setting up her next comedy series.
HBO Max has doled out an eight-episode order to a new half-hour series from her that's tentatively titled Rap Sh*t. The show will follow two estranged high school friends from Miami who reunite to form a rap group. Casting is currently underway and production is set to start this summer.
Insecure and Central Park alum Syreeta Singleton will serve as the showrunner, while Rae will pen the pilot. Rae and Singleton will executive producer alongside HOORAE's Montrel McKay (A Black Lady Sketch Show), Jonathan Berry (Insecure) and 3 Arts' Dave Becky (Russian Doll).
Hip hop duo Yung Miami and JT of City Girls will serve as co-executive producers, along with Kevin "Coach K" Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas for Quality Control Films and Sara Rastogi for HOORAE. Rae’s audio content company Raedio will handle music supervision for the series.
The news comes just after HBO announced that the upcoming fifth season of Insecure would be its last. Rae earned a best comedy series Emmy nomination for its most recent season. She's also an exec producer of two other HBO projects: A Black Lady Sketch Show and the documentary Seen & Heard, about the history of Black representation on television. In addition, Rae is developing a TV adaptation of the podcast Nice White Parents with Adam McKay and a show about backyard wrestling with Dwayne Johnson.
