Straight outta Vandergrift, 'Banshee' comes to HBO Max - TribLIVE

It’s time to go back to Banshee, Pa. — if you dare.

The Cinemax action series, which filmed its fourth and final season in the Alle-Kiski Valley and Pittsburgh area, is now available for streaming on HBO Max.

“We are home,” actor Matt Servitto, who portrayed Banshee sheriff Deputy Brock Lotus on the show, said on Facebook. “Let the Banshee binge-watching BEGIN!!”

“Banshee” and other Cinemax original series, such as “The Knick,” were not available on HBO Max when the service first launched last May, to the chagrin of their fans and critics who felt HBO was leaving quality content on the shelf.

First aired 2013 and initially filmed in North Carolina, “Banshee” tells the story of an ex-con and master thief, portrayed by Antony Starr, who assumes the identity of the murdered sheriff of the fictional Pennsylvania town, who had been hired without being seen.

The production moved to the Pittsburgh area in 2015, with much of the filming taking place in Vandergrift, which became the town of Banshee — or “Bansheegrift,” as some called it. The Casino Theater became Banshee City Hall; an old storefront on Grant Avenue became the sheriff’s department.

Scenes were also shot at a former Westinghouse facility in Churchill, at the Carrie Furnace in Rankin and the former State Correctional Institution-Greensburg in Hempfield.

In addition to Vandergrift, Alle-Kiski Valley locations included a house and barn on Melwood Road in Allegheny Township and the AK Research Park in New Kensington.

Area residents were cast as extras, stand-ins and photo doubles. Among the extras was former Republican Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, who was cast as a reporter.

The show’s fourth season aired on Cinemax in 2016.

There was initially talk, and hope, that the production would return for filming a fifth season, but the series was ended with the fourth. Props, costumes and other property from the show were sold during a public wrap sale in August and September 2015.

Where are they now?

Since “Banshee” wrapped, its stars have moved on. Starr appeared in the series “American Gothic,” and is now appearing as the deeply troubled superhero “Homelander” in the Amazon series “The Boys.”

Servitto got cast as Satan in “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell,” and has appeared on “The Blacklist,” “NCIS: New Orleans” and “Billions.”

Ivana Milicevic, who portrayed Carrie Hopewell on “Banshee,” has appeared on “Gotham,” “Castlevania,” “Strike Back” and “The 100.”

Millicevic portrayed Maria Kyle, mother of Catwoman Salina Kyle, on Gotham. Her fellow “Banshee” cast member, Lili Simmons, appeared as Salina Kyle on the series finale of Gotham.

Ulrich Thomsen, who portrayed the outcast Amish bad guy Kai Proctor, was also cast on “The Blacklist” and appeared on “Counterpart,” “Face to Face” and “The New Pope.”

Matthew Rauch, who portrayed Proctor’s henchman and man servant Clay Burton, also appeared on “NCIS: New Orleans” as well as “Elementary,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Blue Bloods,” “Chambers” and “Chicago, P.D.”

Hoon Lee, who was computer hacker Job, appeared on “Outcast,” “Bosch,” and “Warrior,” and has continued to do voice work for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Frankie Faison portrayed former boxer and wise barkeep Sugar Bates. Also appearing on “The Blacklist,” his work since “Banshee” has included “Luke Cage,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “The Village,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Expanse.”

Eliza Dushku joined the “Banshee” cast for its final, locally filmed season as FBI agent Veronica Dawson. Since then, she has appeared on “Con Man,” “Eloise” and “Bull.”
