The series is described as a harrowing, mind- and reality-bending adventure and marks the latest endeavor for the streamer from the prolific writer-producer.

J.J. Abrams continues to add to his TV slate.

The prolific writer-producer-director has set an original idea, Subject to Change, as his latest TV series for WarnerMedia-backed streamer HBO Max.

The drama follows a desperate college student who signs up for a clinical trial that begins a wild, harrowing, mind- and reality-bending adventure. Abrams will pen the script and exec produce alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale (Legion, Outlander, Underground).

"It's been incredible fun weaving this rather insane yarn with Jenn, and I am grateful to her and everyone at HBO Max for the opportunity to bring this story to life," Abrams said in a statement Friday. Added Yale: "I have felt so privileged to work with J.J. and Bad Robot on expanding J.J.'s exhilarating story to create a twisty, thought-provoking thriller where almost anything is possible and yet everything is planned. Now partnering with HBO Max to make it a reality is a dream."

From Abrams' WarnerMedia-based Bad Robot banner, Yale and Abrams exec produce alongside Bad Robot head of television Ben Stephenson, with the company's Rachel Rusch Rich on board as a co-EP on the drama from Warner Bros. TV.

Subject to Change marks Abrams' latest series for streamer HBO Max as part of his rich overall deal with WarnerMedia. The pickup comes days after news broke that Abrams will exec produce a diverse version of DC's Constantine for HBO Max. Other series in the works for the streamer include Duster, fellow DC entry Justice League Dark and The Shining spinoff Overlook. He also has original idea Demimonde that he's writing for premium cable network HBO.

"We cannot wait to bring this complex, eye-opening thriller to HBO Max," said Sarah Aubrey, head of originals at HBO Max. "It will take viewers on an unexpected ride, showcasing the creative brilliance of J.J., Jennifer and the Bad Robot team."

Bad Robot signed a sprawling film and TV deal with WarneMedia in 2019 following a multiple-outlet bidding war that saw the company draw significant interest from streamers including Apple, with the tech giant offering Abrams more than $500 million. Abrams content is expected to be a centerpiece of HBO Max's platform in the years to come.
