Atlanta Braves News: Sunday doubleheader on tap, Max Fried throws side session and more - Talking Chop

The Atlanta Braves had to wait an extra day to wrap up their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks after Saturday’s game was postponed after strong storms rolled through the Atlanta area. Truist Park was hit with a hail storm in the early evening hours and more storms were expected throughout the evening forcing the postponement.

The Braves and Diamondbacks will play two seven-inning games on Sunday in a traditional format meaning the second game will begin approximately 40 minutes after the first game ends. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. ET.

The Braves will go with Bryse Wilson in Game 1 and Drew Smyly in Game 2.

Brian Snitker provided injury updates for Max Fried and Chris Martin during Saturday’s pregame media session. Fried threw a side session Friday and took part in fielding drills. He was scheduled to hit this weekend and it sounds like he could be nearing a return.

Snitker also said that he doesn’t think reliever Chris Martin will need to spend time at the alternate site before he returns from the injured list. Martin has been on the injured list for the last three weeks but could resume throwing from a mound soon. Snitker said that Martin could pitch in some sim games at Truist Park before returning.

The Braves made a couple of roster moves prior to Saturday’s scheduled game reinstating Drew Smyly from the injured list while optioning infielder Sean Kazmar to the alternate training site. The team also reinstated outfielder Cristian Pache from the injured list and optioned him to the alternate site as well. Snitker said that they want Pache to see some consistent at-bats and to get back on track before they throw him back in the fire.

Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich traveled back to Milwaukee on Saturday for an MRI on his ailing back. Yelich was eligible to return from the injured list Saturday but has plateaued in his recovery according to manager Craig Counsell.

The Brewers also placed pitchers Brett Anderson and Josh Lindblom on the injured list. Anderson is dealing with a strained right hamstring while Lindblom has a right knee effusion.

The Miami Marlins have paused all minor league activities this weekend due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests among players per a report by ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard took another step forward in his recovery from Tommy John surgery Saturday by facing live hitters in an intrasquad game. Syndergaard reportedly looked good and hit 97 mph with his fastball.

The Detroit Tigers will activate Miguel Cabrera from the 10-day injured list on Sunday. Cabrera was has been out since April 11 due to a bicep strain.

Astros right-hander Jake Odorizzi left Saturday’s start against the Angels after just five pitches due to tightness in his forearm.

The Angels designated infielder Jack Mayfield for assignment Saturday. Mayfield was acquired from the Braves in February after he was claimed off waivers. He received three plate appearances in two games with the Angels.
