The Angels infirmary is getting crowded, less than two weeks into the season. On Tuesday, catcher Max Stassi was the latest to hit the injured list, with a left thumb sprain after getting jammed on Monday night.
Stassi caught the first six innings on Monday against the Royals, but was removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh. The veteran catcher was off to a hot start this season, 6-for-16 (.375) at the plate with a home run and three walks, and had started six of the first 10 games of the season.
This comes one day after placing third baseman Anthony Rendon on the injured list with a groin strain, and two days after learning right fielder Dexter Fowler would be out for the season with a torn ACL.
Kurt Suzuki is in the lineup for the Angels on Tuesday night, catching Dylan Bundy in the second game of a three-game set in Kansas City.
Anthony Bemboom was recalled by the Angels to take Stassi’s place on the roster. Bemboom last year hit .208/.328/.417 with three home runs in 21 games, and caught 20 games for the Angels, including 16 starts.
Jack Mayfield, who was called up Monday when Rendon was placed on the injured list, starts at third base and bats ninth for the Halos on Tuesday.
