HBO Max has started to fill out the cast of one of its upcoming DC projects. La La Land’s Finn Wittrock will play Guy Gardner in the streaming service’s Green Lantern series, Deadline reports.
Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, Guy Gardner first appeared in Green Lantern #59 in 1968. In the pages of DC Comics, Gardner was one of the two men chosen as the successor to Green Lantern Abin Sur, but since Hal Jordan was in closer proximity to the alien at the time of his death, Jordan received the ring. But years later, during Crisis on Infinite Earths, Gardner would receive his ring from a newly formed faction of the Guardians of the Universe.
Wittrock’s debut came in 2004’s Halloweentown High, but he wouldn’t break out until 2014 for his roles in The Normal Heart, Noah and Unbroken. In the years since, he’s continued to be a mainstay on the big screen, appearing in numerous movies, including The Big Short, If Beale Street Could Talk and The Last Black Man in San Francisco.

Green Lantern’s first season will consist of 10 one-hour episodes and begin in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, Alan Scott, before transitioning to Gardner’s story in 1984. The series will be co-written and executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, with Grahame-Smith serving as showrunner.
