TriMet on Sunday shut down all MAX lines until Tuesday after record-high temperatures began disrupting the light rail service, TriMet said.
Portland’s highest temperatures ever strained the power grid and overhead wires delivering electricity to MAX, a system built to run in conditions as high as 110 degrees.
The National Weather Service reported late Sunday afternoon that temperatures hit 112 degrees, breaking the 107-degree record first set in 1965 and the previous record of 108 reached Saturday.
TriMet said mechanical issues caused by the heat wave disrupted MAX Blue, Green, Red and Yellow lines earlier Sunday, and high temperatures forecasted through Tuesday morning would put MAX trains at risk of more disruptions.
“TriMet is concerned for the health and well-being of our passengers, and we want everyone to stay healthy and safe during this unprecedented heat wave,” the statement read. “It will take time to give the system time to cool off.”
The WES commuter rail line that links Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin and Wilsonville can operate only up to 105-degree temperatures and will also be closed Monday.
If possible, TriMet suggested riders use bus services, which will maintain normal routes, barring delays. It recommends riders visit its alerts page for information before traveling during the heat wave.
“We appreciate our riders’ understanding and encourage everyone to stay hydrated and to not travel right now unless it’s necessary. Every light rail system has certain thresholds beyond the usual operating environment that force temporary changes in operations, be that low or high temperatures,” TriMet’s statement read. “The current heat wave is dangerous not just for its severity but also its duration and the lack of cooling overnight.”
The Office of State Fire Marshal also suspended regulations prohibiting Oregonians from pumping their own gas at retail service stations, according to a statement issued late Sunday afternoon. Gov. Kate Brown’s office approved the suspension, which will be in effect for 48 hours through Tuesday, June 29.
The suspension will not affect areas or timeframes in which Oregon state law already allowed self-serving gas, with details about self-service available at the fire marshal’s website.
