Max Muncy left Friday night’s game against the Rangers after just one inning, with right side tightness.
“I’m really hesitant to say an oblique, but that’s where it was at,” manager Dave Roberts said after the game. “We got ahead of it early, in our opinion, and in Max’s opinion.”
Muncy hit a two-run home run in the first inning against Mike Foltynewicz to open the scoring in a six-run frame in which the Dodgers sent 10 batters to the plate. Muncy’s spot was on deck when the inning ended, but Albert Pujols had a helmet on and was holding a bat on the steps of the dugout.
Pujols didn’t bat in the first inning, but replaced Muncy at first base to begin the top of the second.
In the top of the first, all three batters against Clayton Kershaw grounded out, one to Chris Taylor at second base, one to Justin Turner at third, and another to shortstop Gavin Lux. Turner threw quickly to get Eli White, and bounced the throw to first base, where Muncy stretched to receive it.
In the bottom of the inning, Muncy swung at two pitches from Foltynewicz, fouling off the first-pitch fastball, then hitting a fifth-pitch slider into the right field pavilion. Muncy felt something in his right side on his first swing.
Last Friday in Atlanta, Muncy felt pain in his right ankle and was removed mid-game.
“It’s not quite an ankle sprain, but we got X-rays, we had doctors look at it. We’re just not entirely sure,” Muncy said Wednesday in Pittsburgh. “Thankfully it doesn’t seem like it’s anything too serious, but we’re keeping an eye on it.”
He was held out of the lineup for three of the five remaining games on the road trip, though he pinch hit in two of the three games he didn’t start. Muncy leads the Dodgers this season in starts (57 of 63 games) and defensive innings (487⅓), mixing time between first and second base.
