PUEBLO — University of Colorado second-time sophomore Kristoffer Max opened with his collegiate best round here Monday, which propelled him into the lead after two rounds of the Southern Colorado Masters.

Max is one of four Buffaloes participating here as individuals, as the CU coaching staff is utilizing the tournament to help set the final lineup for the Pac-12 Championships.

Max started his day with a 6-under par 65, shaving four strokes off his previous best, playing a near perfect round with an eagle, four birdies and 13 pars on the 6,522-yard, par-71 Pueblo Country Club course configuration.  He came back in the afternoon with a 2-under 69, which has him sitting at 8-under 134 with a five-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round.

His 65 and 134 totals are team bests for the 2020-21 season, as the previous lows were 67 and 136, respectively.  Max had the eagle, eight birdies and 25 pars with just two bogeys Monday.  He played the par-3s even, and the par-4s and par-5s both at 4-under, leading the 54-man field in the former.  He scored par or better on his first 24 holes, and including the last seven holes in his previous appearance in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate, his 31 straight without a bogey tied Daniel O'Loughlin for the team-best this year.

Senior Ross Macdonald is tied for fifth after recording a 72-69—141 performance, his 1-under par effort buoyed by a co-team high of nine birdies and an eagle.  He double-bogeyed his second hole in round two but then came back to play 4-under the remainder of the day.

Graduate transfer Chris Bornhorst, in his first competition with the Buffaloes, turned in a par if 73s, his 4-over 146 total tying him for 22nd.  He played the 20 combined par-4 holes at 1-under, which tied for fourth-best in the field.

Redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski opened with a 71 and then turned in a 78 in the afternoon, his 7-over 149 tying him for 31st.  While equaling Macdonald's team-best nine birdies, he had a bit of wild ride the second time around PCC, with five birdies and four pars countered by the six bogeys and three doubles.

Host CSU-Pueblo owns the team leads with a 5-under par score of 563, 11 shots ahead of runner-up CU Colorado Springs (574) with Colorado Mines in third (576).
