Max Muncy is an MVP candidate. I’m sure we all expected that when the Dodgers picked him up a few years ago, right?
The 30-year-old is currently having a career-year for the Dodgers, and it isn’t going unnoticed. Muncy has the second best odds to win National League MVP at +750, per Fan Duel. Normally that would be great, but he sits behind the current favorite, Fernando Tatis Jr. At the moment, the Padres superstar is -300 to win.
Still, there is plenty of time for Muncy to make a push.
As of August 19, Muncy has a 5.9 bWAR, the highest among all position players in baseball. He has 28 home runs and 75 RBI, to go along with an OPS of .982 and 163 wRC+. Over the last few months, I’ve quietly been making a push for Muncy to receive MVP consideration. Well, he finally got it last night at Dodger Stadium.
After his two-homer performance, Muncy was showered with “MVP!” chants at Dodger Stadium.
“That’s one of the cooler moments I’ve had in my career,” he said following the game. “I had to hold back a smile when I was in the batters box.”
Muncy said that although being in consideration for the MVP award is great, he’s more focused on helping the Dodgers reach the playoffs again, with his No. 1 goal being to help the team win their second World Series in a row.
“It’s great,” manager Dave Roberts said on the MVP chants. “Whenever fans recognize you as a potential MVP, you’ve got to be doing something right. It’s noise, it’s positive, but he’s still got to go out there and play defense and take good at bats.
“The thing that is the most consistent is his production. He’s consistent in getting on base, driving in runs, slugging. Now there’s that MVP talk. It’s well deserved. All Max cares about is helping us win a game each night.”
As mentioned earlier, it’ll be tough for him to overtake Tatis Jr., as he is also having an incredible season, barely leading Muncy in some key numbers. But, if Tatis Jr., were to spend more time on the IL, or if Muncy really continues this tear he’s on, it’ll truly come down to the wire.
